The Distinguished New Educator and Distinguished Mentor Awards are among the highest honors a teacher can receive in Santa Barbara County. The awards are designed to highlight and recognize exceptional instruction, leadership, and potential. Administrators, colleagues, or others who are acutely familiar with the nominee’s work are invited to nominate teachers for these awards. Award winners are recognized at A Salute to Teachers, our annual, teacher recognition event held in partnership with our Founding Sponsor, Cox Communications. For information, contact: the SBCEO Teachers Network.

How are awards selected?
Nominations are read and selected by a committee of teachers, administrators, and business and community partners. Three Distinguished New Educator and three Distinguished Mentors are selected each year.

Tips for a strong nomination:
The selection committee is looking for complete, well-written nominations that provide specific details and examples of how the nominee demonstrates the criteria described for each award category above.  The nomination should pay specific attention to how the nominee is unique and demonstrates exemplary qualities not commonly found in their peers.

When will I hear if my nominee is selected?
Notifications will be made approximately three to four weeks after the deadline.

Distinguished New Educator and Distinguished Mentor award recipients:

  • Will be recognized at the annual Salute to Teachers event.
  • May be interviewed and filmed for promotional purposes.
